The undergraduate admission process in West Bengal will begin shortly, Education Minister Bratya Basu confirmed in the Assembly on Monday. The announcement came in response to a question from BJP MLA Bishwanath Karak, who raised concerns over the delay in starting the admission process despite the release of Class 12 results by various boards.
Bratya Basu stated that the online application process will be launched on time, as per the University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines. He said, “Last year, the portal opened on June 19. This year, preparations are almost complete. The portal is ready and will be launched very soon. Everything is being done according to a set timeline.”
The Higher Secondary results in West Bengal were declared on May 7, ISC results on April 30, and CBSE Class 12 results on May 13. However, the undergraduate admission portal has not yet opened, prompting questions from students, parents, and academic institutions. Interim Vice-Chancellor of Calcutta University, Shanta Dutta De, said, “Students who passed Higher Secondary are asking when admissions will start. We are unable to provide an answer. If the process remains delayed, the responsibility lies with the government.”
Meanwhile, a legal dispute over OBC certificates issued after 2010 has added to the uncertainty. The Calcutta High Court recently ruled these certificates invalid, stating that individuals added to the OBC list after 2010 cannot claim reservation benefits. The state government has challenged the decision in the Supreme Court, with the next hearing scheduled in July. Bratya Basu has clarified that this issue will not impact the schedule for undergraduate admissions.
